Importance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs)

Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) play a pivotal role in the education of Latino/a youth. While Hispanic undergraduate students made up 17.5% of the total U.S. undergraduate enrollment in 2022 and 9% of the graduate student population, 67% of all Hispanic students attended a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). The number of HSIs in the U.S. is approximately 600, usually located in cities and suburbs. Florida International University, one of the largest HSIs awarded 8,781 bachelor degrees and 1,844 master’s degree to Latinos in the 2019-20 school year.

The number of employees at Latino-owned businesses has grown 55% since 2007, compared to 8% for non-Latino firms.
